Trail Review: Lake Loop Trail (Fort Mountain State Park – Georgia)
Lake Loop is a very easy hike. It’s fairly level (though be aware of swampy puddles if it’s rained) and mostly sandy dirt. The views of the lake are really beautiful and peaceful.

We started our hike from the lakeside campground, but you can also start from the beach area, or from the road about half way around the lake.
This hike is key to several other trails. We were able to take all of our hikes with Lake Loop as the starting point. I enjoy being able to park the van and not drive again while in a park.
How to prepare: I’ve been on this hike in all seasons. My advice is probably the same for all of them.
- Watch the weather – This hike is fairly quick so you can just wear what is weather appropriate. I would wear tennis shoes or hiking shoes, especially if it’s rained and you’ll be walking through prickly bushes to avoid puddles
- Bring water – I know it’s just a mile, but Georgia can be very hot
- Bug spray – be sure to apply before hitting the trail. This area is very buggy. Add some standing water and it’s a lot worse.
My Experience
I found Lake Loop to be really peaceful. I wasn’t, and rarely am, looking for something strenuous. This loop was a lovely stroll around the lake. The first time we did it the fog was dancing along the lake. It felt like a move. The next day it was bring and sunny.
Dealing with the swampy puddles was a bit of a pain. I was glad I was wearing long pants on the first day. I needed to walk through some prickly bushes to avoid the puddles. It does look like they go to great lengths to prevent puddles. I just happened to be there right after some serious rain.
Enjoy this hike. Soak up the birds and the water and the trees…enjoy the peace.
Basics
Location: Chatsworth, Georgia
Level: Easy
Distance: 1.1 miles
Parking: Yes. I think the beach area would be your best bet. Though you can also park just off the trail as well.
Bathrooms: A toilet is available in the swimming area. This trail also walks beside the lakeside campground and they have a bathhouse not far off the trail
What to wear: It’s a quick hike, so you would be safe just looking at the weather. If it has rained recently, you may encounter some fairly muddy areas. It took a solid day or two for the swampy puddles to dry out
What to pack: Water, bug spray (they don’t mess around in Georgia)
Dog Friendly: Great trail for dogs. Just remember that they need to be on a 6′ leash. They are NOT allowed on the beach, so you’ll want to make sure you walk around that area
