How to use Micro Spikes

Have you heard of micro spikes? Other than maybe in a movie when you watch someone walking up a glacier…and those probably aren’t the same. Well this piece of gear is your best friend on icy trails and sidewalks.

Micro spikes (often called crampons) are chains that you put on the bottom of your boots or shoes. They tend to have a rubber strap that stretches to attach them to your foot. The spikes press into the ice to grab traction and keep you stable. I’ve used these on hiking trails, and this winter I pulled them out to walk the dogs after a bad ice storm that just wouldn’t melt.

If you are in a cold weather climate, you can likely get these at any outdoor store.  I picked mine up at REI. You can also get them online, just about any outdoor store, or check out your local outdoor store.

Why do you need them:

  • They give you traction and stability in icy situations
  • They are versatile and can strap on to any boot or shoe
  • They are small and easy to carry
