Welcome to Fort Mountain State Park. And what a welcome it was! I drove up the very steep and winding mountain road, through the thick clouds, before entering the park. It was dramatic and mystical. Now, I know not everyone will have such luck, but it was a stunning way to creep up the mountain.

Upon entering, you are immediately welcomed by a visitor center and store to the right. It’s a one-stop shop for any supplies or souvenirs you may need, camping check-in, and expert opinions on trails and activities.

Continuing down the park road, you’ll come across the campgrounds. They have 2 large campgrounds with spacious camp sites.  They are stacked along a hill so it feels like every site has a view of the lake (Lakeside campgrounds). They also have a creekside campground (I didn’t go visit that one).  The one lodging I missed, and am kicking myself, is the cottages.  After I left I saw some photos of them and they are amazing! They look new and spacious.  And the views from the screened (key in buggy areas) porch is incredible!  Be sure to check them out on the park website.

The activities and fun at Fort Mountain are endless.  They have hiking, swimming, biking, and fishing.  I overheard them talking about rentals, but they weren’t open when I visited. It seems like a very busy summer playground, and being just outside of Atlanta, I’m sure it’s a great escape from the city.

My experience:

I had a really good time at this park.  Due to mechanical issues the prior week, and a short timetable before having to wrap up the GA parks, I had to cut the time short.  I don’t know that more time would have made much of a difference.  I still got in a lot of hiking. I think if I had come later in the season, when more activities were open, I would want a little bit more time.

I also came in the rain. It didn’t prevent me from doing anything, but I dealt with muddy trails and many layers of clothing.

Fort Mountain is a spectacular getaway in northern Georgia.  It feels secluded and like a real departure from civilization. Though I must also say that having Chatsworth at the bottom of the hill was great! One night I just wasn’t in the mood to cook and I was able to pick up the most amazing Italian dinner (thank you, Little Rome!).

Basics

Location: Chatsworth, Georgia

Parking: The park provides ample parking through out the park depending on the activity you are looking to participate in

Bathrooms: They have some bathrooms throughout the park. I noticed by some of the hiking trails, the beach, visitor center & campgrounds.

What to wear: This depends on the weather and your activities.  While I was there, the weather changed regularly, so I was happy to have layers – from winter to spring. I would guess this is pretty common throughout the year.

What to pack: Layers, for sure. I visited in the spring and needed everything from long pants and winter jacket, to rain gear, to spring hiking clothes. Check the weather before you go. I would guess this region is also prone to thunderstorms in the summer, so be sure to have rain gear.

Pets: Pets are allowed. Tootsie went everywhere with me. I just needed to keep her on a 6ft leash.
