Finding a campground in this part of the country, in mid-September, that wasn’t already winterized (thus had water) was challenging. But thankfully I came across New England Outdoor Center (NEOC).

Thankfully the woman who booked my spot warned me that GPS directions wouldn’t likely work (though it did on WAZE). You leave Millinocket and head towards Baxter State Park. Just before the painted rock, NEOC is on your right. Drive down the dirt road to the pavilion. Walk down the driveway to check-in.

The pavilion is a unique bonus to this facility. It’s home to a cafe, bar, ping pong, pool tables, and a piano. The bathhouse and kitchen wash station are also located at the pavilion.

Campsites are scattered throughout the property. Most of the tent sites are along the main road before getting to the pavilion. My site was farther back and intermingled with cabins. If it was in season and full, I probably wouldn’t have liked my site. It was tight quarters and I imagine kind of loud when cabins are occupied. However, on this trip, I was the only person in this part of the campground. It was quiet and peaceful.

While flush toilets and showers are available at the pavilion, they have pit toilets more conveniently located in other areas of the campground.

You may purchase ice and wood at the main building. They also have t-shirts and other souvenirs for sale. Millinocket, ME is approximately 11 miles/35 minutes away. They have a good grocery store, hardware store, gas stations, etc. Katahdin General Store seemed to have the best supply of camping supplies.
