Sleep is the most important part of my day. I could write an entire post on my sleep routine and how it is non-negotiable for me. So when it came time for this trip, and hearing horror stories about sleep while camping (or lack thereof), this mattress is top of my list when it comes to your investment.

The REI Camp Dreamer XL Self-Inflating Deluxe Bed got great reviews. It was a bit of a gamble, but one that paid off.  I was comfortable making the investment because REI takes returns for a year.  But this bed was so comfortable that I longed for it after having hotel nights or visits with friends.

My thoughts:

  • Buy it, set it up, air it out before your first trip.
  • It’s not a “pop open” kind of thing, or even inflate all the way if you leave the valve open. The pillow-like item you see on the mattress is also a tool to help pump open the bed.  You’ll need to do this every time you set it up.
  • When I was in a spot for multiple nights, I had to pup up the mattress every few days
  • The pillow-like item wouldn’t be a great pillow. Still pack your favorite pillow – it makes a huge difference.
  • After 4 years my mattress leaks air.  I need to see if it has a small hole. I’m still very glad that I purchased this bed.  It made a big difference for a very long time.
